Dear Friends,

Sending out a huge thank you to everyone that has checked in on me during the hurricane in Houston. So far I am fine, but many friend’s homes are not. It feels so wrong to post anything related to fashion right now. I know I have a “fashion blog,” but as I have mentioned before, my mission is to also give back to the community. It is times like these that make you even more thankful for the people God has placed in your life.

I sit here writing this in my Rockets “Clutch City” tee-shirt feeling very prideful for the city I have grown up in. Houston has been my home almost my whole life, and it is so heartbreaking to experience this kind of destruction. Also, both of my parents have lived in Houston their whole lives. It is very sad to watch the city we love in anguish. It is almost exhausting to watch any news coverage because that is just about all that has been on the past couple of days. Of course, I check it every now and then to make sure there isn’t another tornado warning, but it just feels like it is never-ending.

How Can You Help Houston?

If you feel called to help, I have linked several different ways you can donate or help those in need of shelter below. If you can’t donate, just keep Houston and the families that have been impacted in your prayers.

DONATE

  • The Junior League of Houston has started a relief fund for its members and supporters in rebuilding efforts. They will be asking for items once the storm has passed but you can still donate now to help. I am so proud to be involved in an organization like the Junior League that continuously shows it support to our community.
  • Kendra Scott is donating 50% of your purchase to the American Red Cross to support those affected by Hurricane Harvey. I love this as Kendra Scott is a native Houstonian.
  • Another native Houstonian, Elaine Turner, is donating 20% of your purchase to the American Red Cross to support those in need.
  • Donate to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey victims. You can also donate by texting HARVEY to 90999 for a $10 donation.
  • Donate to the Salvation Army for Hurricane Harvey victims. They also take in household items etc.
  • Donate to AmeriCares Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
  • Donate the Houston Humane Society. Our animals will need help and rescue, too!
  • Through eBay/Paypal you can also donate and choose many organizations to donate back to. All organizations will help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

SHELTER & SUPPLIES

  • For those seeking shelter or wanting to donate items, my church Memorial Drive Presbyterian is taking in those that have to evacuate. It is pet-friendly!
  • George R. Brown Convention Center is now taking in those that need shelter and supplies. Thousands are already there, but it is so large they are taking in more evacuees.
  • This article lists shelters for those that are displaced in all areas of Houston. Most of these shelters are also pet-friendly!

I will continue to update this article if I find any more ways you can easily donate or find help. If there are some important organizations I have missed, please let me know. I am sure after the storm passes this will not be the end as we can assess more businesses and families that need our help! My heart goes out to those that have lost their homes and loved ones in this storm. We have to stay strong together for our city!

With much love,

Byrdie
